How to build a shadowless photography kit yourself? A practical guide to product photos in your store
If you're an online retailer and want to get started with taking shadowless photos yourself, start by understanding the basics — and keep it simple. You don't have to have a full studio right away. With just a few thoughtful steps, you can improve the quality of your product photos and attract the attention of your customers.
Our advice: a simple but well-thought-out solution is better to start with than random photos against the background of a kitchen countertop, and even AI retouching won't help here - you'll still see color reflections and it's not entirely possible to choose chiaroscuro well.
First of all:
Choose a space with controlled light. Preferably away from windows, where you can set the light sources yourself and have an impact on each shadow. The background should be white and matte - it can be a wall made of cardboard, plexiglass or cardboard.
Secondly:
If you don't have access to professional tables for shadowless photography, you can build your own by using a light-colored tabletop and setting lights around it. Ideally, you should illuminate the product from both sides at a 45° angle, using soft light (e.g. from LED lamps through a diffuser).
This is the key to getting a photo without the shadow effect. Use light-diffusing accessories – fabric, paper, panels. If you have the opportunity, test simple special photo tents (sometimes called "softboxes" or "photo tents"). Some tent models also allow you to photograph the product from below.
Third:
Place the camera on a tripod to avoid movement. It's good if you have the option to manually adjust white balance, exposure, and focus – this will ensure consistency between shots. Avoid automation – it works, but rarely predictably.
Don't upload the first photo taken "quickly". Make several versions, check on the screen, compare with the competition. Your photo is your business card.
